Built on a collaborative partnership between the New Jersey Department of Human Services, Division of Family Development and Rutgers University Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Understanding TANF in New Jersey is a three-year, comprehensive research project designed to examine Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) in New Jersey. The goal of the project’s mixed-methods research agenda is two-fold: 1) to describe the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) population in NJ, and 2) to examine how benefits and services are helping TANF recipients obtain and maintain work.
The research goals will be met using both quantitative analysis of administrative data and qualitative analysis of client and caseworker experiences. This combination of quantitative and qualitative data allows for both a statistical understanding of patterns and outcomes with administrative data as well as a more in-depth ground-level understanding of practices and experiences.
